On December 2, 2020, Stephen Sidney Groce III passed away at the age of 75. Steve was the proud and loving father of Deanna Lee Groce-McAtee and Laura Ann Widener. He treasured his five grandchildren Grant Christian McAtee, Devin Scott Widener, Collin David McAtee, Carter Delbert McAtee, and Riley Anne Widener.
Steve was born in Parkersburg, WV on October 2, 1945 to Stephen Sidney II and Kathryn Groce. After high school Steve joined the United States Navy where he proudly served on the USS Wright as a Machinist Mate Second Class during the Vietnam War. After returning home from the service, Steve married Geraldine Baker and they resided in Lawrenceburg, IN. Steve worked at Thatcher Glass along with his father and brother in laws before going on to work at Monsanto where he later retired. Steve loved to piddle outside with just about anything. He enjoyed working in the yard and relaxing while listening to the Eagles and CCR. He also learned how to plant potatoes and corn the right way by his father in law.
Steve loved his God, his country, and his chili cheese fries! He enjoyed reading, fishing, watching Westerns, good music, and watching Nascar. He had an unhealthy dislike for Kyle Busch and would absolutely come unglued if he took the lead. He enjoyed anything that allowed him to be outdoors, especially if it included a grill full of burgers and his family around him. He was Carter's biggest fan at baseball games and Riley's at her soccer games.
Steve was preceded in death by his parents, Stephen Sidney II and Kathryn (Higgins) Groce, His sisters, Mary Kathryn Smeeks, and Terry McCarty. Those left to cherish his memory are his beloved daughters, Deanna Lee Groce-McAtee and Laura Ann Widener, His grandchildren Grant, Devin, Collin, Carter, and Riley, His sister Nancy (Walter) Bawn and his brother in laws that were not only his brother in laws but also his best friends, Leroy Smeeks and Walter Bawn. Steve had a special closeness with his nephews, Mike, Matt, and Casey Smeeks as well as his nieces, Jennifer (Bawn) Clapp and Jessica (Bawn) Zumwalde; nephew, Bill Hackett.
In Lieu of flowers or donations, his daughters ask that you simply do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for someone in need.
