Dale Richard Moeller

September 13, 1936 ~ July 15, 2022 (age 85)

Dale Richard Moeller, 85, of Aurora, IN passed away on July 15, 2022.  He was born on September 13, 1936 in Milan, IN, the only son of Glenna (Rosengarn) and Ervin Moeller.  Dale was a lifelong resident of Aurora, growing up on Conwell Street and later moving to the new family home on Hanover Street in 1950.  Dale was a lifelong and confirmed member of St. John Lutheran Church where he began his education in Grades 1 through 8 in the multi-graded classrooms of St. John Lutheran School.
Dale graduated from Aurora High School in 1954, playing basketball and baseball.  While 1954 was the year Milan High School won the state basketball championship, it should be noted the Aurora team defeated Milan during the season.  They lost to Milan, however, in the Regional Tournament.  For many years, the Milan team invited members of the Aurora team to its annual basketball reunion as these gentlemen share a very special time in sports history.
During his high school years, Dale began working at the Aurora Flour & Feed Mill (later known as Dearborn Mills) with his father.  In 1955, he began working for Pepsi, initially driving a trailer filled with the days’ stock for Southeast Indiana from the Reading Road distribution center.  He soon began his own delivery route for Rising Sun, Dillsboro, and Aurora where he met many people, but never a stranger.  The experience and the people he met uniquely positioned him for a successful career in the insurance business.  In 1963, Dale and Carl Petty purchased the local Nationwide Insurance Agency, however Dale became sole owner when Carl joined the Aurora Lumber Company in 1965.  Dale continued working as Southeast Indiana’s Nationwide agent alongside his assistant Judy Cox, in the office on Second Street in Aurora, until his retirement in 2018 after 55 years’ of service.
Dale has been a member of the Aurora Lions Club since August, 1975.  He was a member of the Farmers’ Fair Board, beginning in 1980, and served as Parade Chairman for 5 years and Treasurer for 3 years.  He was the Grand Marshall of the parade in 2015.  Dale also served his community through the Aurora Park Board Membership and as a Board Member of the Peoples’ Federal Savings Bank in the late 80’s and early 90’s.  He was a basketball referee for surrounding elementary and middle schools from 1955 to the late 80’s and continued to support local youth sports as a faithful spectator.
Dale was an avid sports fan, holding Cincinnati Reds season tickets with his wife, Marilyn, since 1976 and rarely missed a game.  They also attended University of Cincinnati basketball games from the days of Oscar Robertson to their most recent season.  They have attended major sporting events in other cities including the 1976 Montreal Olympics, the Super Bowl, NCAA Final Four, and the Baseball Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Cooperstown.
Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Ervin and Glenna (Rosengarn) Moeller, brother-in-law Bill Slayback and nephew Michael Strasemeier.   He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Marilyn (Watts), daughter Terri (Mark) Schmeltzer, sisters-in-law Gayle Slayback and Beverly (Kenneth) Strasemeier, grandchildren David Schmeltzer, Sam (Ivy) Schmeltzer and Emily (Patrick) Kolks, great-grandchildren Ava and Luke Schmeltzer and many nieces and nephews.
Friends will be received at St. John Lutheran Church, 220 Mechanic St., Aurora, on Wednesday, July 20th from 5 to 8 p.m.  Funeral services will be Thursday, July 21st at 11 a.m. at the church with Pastor Edward Davis and Pastor Ronald Stephens officiating.  Interment will follow at Riverview Cemetery, Aurora, IN.  Memorial contributions can be made to St. John Lutheran School or Church or P.A.W.S. of Dearborn County
